Popular review website, TripAdvisor has been under scrutiny by Which? Travel following the failure to stop fake reviews on top-rated hotels.
Consumer organisation, Which? analysed almost 250,000 reviews for the 10 top-ranked hotels in popular tourist destinations from around the world and the results found that one in seven had blatantly fake reviews.
After analysing the results, Which? Travel reported the fake reviews to TripAdvisor who then advised that six of the hotels included in the findings had already been penalised for breaking guidelines and two had been given a 'red badge' warning for suspicious activity, however this was not made clear to travellers looking at reviews on the site.
Following the investigation, TripAdvisor has now taken down hundreds of the fake reviews.
