You life in their hands: Calls for stricter rules on private holiday homes

Sidmouth Town Council has said that more needs to be done to ensure that people are safe when using private holiday homes through websites such as Airbnb. Campaigners Jo Watson of Dukes, and Alistair Handyside of South West Tourism Alliance are calling for actions over companies that have terms and conditions that they cannot guarantee that the accommodation is safe of even exists.

Hosts and consumers need to be made aware of the risks when listing or renting a property on booking platforms. It’s only a matter of time until somebody is injured or worse whilst staying in a short term let.

Hosts especially need to be educated in what is required when listing their property – it is a serious business and not to be taken lightly. Our Safe, Clean and Legal accreditation is suitable for entry level hospitality products, when quality star ratings may not be relevant or applicable and works for home stay type of accommodation and the private rental sector.
